Determining one’s entitlement to alimony (known also as spousal support or spousal maintenance) can be a complicated matter.  Alimony is defined by as “a legal obligation on a person to provide financial support to his or her spouse before or after marital separation or divorce”.  Traditionally alimony was paid by the husband to his wife, but since the 1970’s this is no longer necessarily the case.  Alimony has nothing to do with gender, and everything to do with earnings.
